| The two friends shaking hands are a reflection of the state motto "United We Stand, Divided We Fall." The state motto means working together for the
benefit of all. Kentucky is one of four states that call themselves a commonwealth instead of a state (Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, and Virginia). It is essentially the same
thing. The state flower, goldenrod is also on the flag.
